Sterile Operating Theatre
The British Veterinary Centre is the only veterinary
practice which operates a sterile theatre.
This means our operating theatre has controlled access to
staff and visitors and is designed in a special way with
separate ventilation.
Staff only enter the theatre when they are wearing theatre
scrubs and theatre clogs.
The room is kept free of germs which could infect the wound
during surgery.
The British Veterinary Centre is the only veterinary
practice in the Gulf currently routinely performing certain
surgeries like spinal, orthopaedic reconstructive plating
and TPLO operations. These are often long surgeries and
extra sterility is essential to prevent complications.
The benefits of running a sterile theatre also extend to
routine surgeries like cat and dog sterilizations. Extra
sterility avoids the routine use of antibiotics and there
are almost no post operative wound infections.
In the picture Dr Hale is performing an orthopaedic
procedure. The black handled instrument is a compressed air
orthopaedic handpiece (de Soutter MPZ) manufactured for the
human orthopaedic specialists but used here to achieve
excellent results in small animal surgery.
